A basic film lighting kit

Most scenes start with three lights. A key light - usually a COB monolight with a softbox or lantern - is the main source on the subject. A fill light, often a panel or a bounce, lifts the shadows. A backlight, such as a tube or a small spotlight, separates the subject from the background. Add stands, diffusion and a way to control spill, and the same kit covers interviews, short films and product shoots. Our guide to LED lights for film shooting prices three complete kits, and the wedding videography lighting guide shows a portable version.
